What Is Adenosine, and Why Does It Matter for Baby Sleep?
I talk a lot about sleep pressure, the natural drive to sleep that builds the longer your baby is awake. But what's actually causing that drive? The answer is a molecule called adenosine, and understanding it makes the whole concept of sleep pressure, wake windows, and sleep training timing much more intuitive.
What Is Adenosine?
Adenosine is a chemical that builds up naturally in the brain for as long as a person is awake. Every minute spent awake, adenosine accumulates a little further. The longer the stretch of wakefulness, the higher the level climbs.
This rising level of adenosine is what produces the physical feeling of tiredness. It's the actual biological mechanism behind what I refer to as sleep pressure: not a vague idea of "they've been up a while," but a real, measurable chemical process happening in your baby's brain.
Once your baby falls asleep, adenosine starts to clear. By the time they wake up, levels have dropped back down, and the whole cycle begins again.
Why This Matters for Wake Windows
This is exactly why wake windows exist as a concept in the first place, and also exactly why generic, age-based wake windows are only ever a rough guide. The rate at which adenosine builds up, and how high it needs to climb before your baby is genuinely ready to sleep, varies from baby to baby. This is part of what separates a high sleep need baby from a low sleep need one: their adenosine dynamics simply aren't identical.
This is also why timing matters so much. If your baby is put down before adenosine has built up sufficiently, falling asleep is going to be a harder job, simply because the biological "ready to sleep" signal isn't strong enough yet. This often shows up as resistance at naptime or bedtime, a nap that ends after only one sleep cycle, or a false start shortly after bedtime because there wasn't enough sleep pressure behind it to begin with.
How This Connects to Sleep Training
This is also why I'm so insistent that sleep need has to be calculated and the routine built around it before sleep training begins. Sleep training relies on naps and bedtime being scheduled at points where adenosine, and therefore sleep pressure, has built up appropriately. No method, however gentle or however structured, can manufacture sleep pressure that simply isn't there yet, because the adenosine hasn't had time to accumulate.
