Overtired Baby: Why this is a Myth and not Based on Evidence
If you've spent any time in baby sleep forums or scrolling sleep accounts online, you've almost certainly come across "overtiredness." It's usually presented as a kind of danger zone: miss the window, and your baby tips into an overtired state that makes everything worse and is much harder to recover from.
I want to gently push back on this one, because as widely as it's repeated, it isn't based on any actual research or evidence. It's a popular idea, not an established one, and I don't think it's something parents need to spend energy worrying about.
Where the Idea Falls Apart
The concept of "overtired" suggests that being awake for too long flips some kind of switch, after which a baby becomes harder to settle, almost as though they've crossed a point of no return. But this isn't how sleep biology actually works, and there's no evidence base behind the idea as it's commonly used.
Think of it a bit like saying you're "too hungry to eat." It doesn't really hold up. Hunger builds the longer you go without food, and at a certain point you eat. You don't become unable to eat because you left it too long. Sleep works on a similarly straightforward build-up: the drive to sleep increases the longer your baby is awake. It doesn't become impossible to act on simply because it's been building for a while.
So Why Do Some Late Naps or Bedtimes Go Badly?
This is the part worth understanding properly, because something real is going on, it's just not "overtiredness" in the way it's usually described.
The drive to sleep, sleep pressure, builds steadily the longer your baby is awake. If that pressure isn't acted on at the right point, a baby can become drowsy without actually being put down to sleep. And if drowsiness sets in without your baby properly falling asleep, some of that built-up sleep pressure can be released without it converting into actual rest.
This is closer to what's really happening when a nap or bedtime "goes wrong" after a long stretch awake: not that the baby has become impossible to settle, but that sleep pressure was allowed to peak and then partially dissipate through drowsy wakefulness, rather than being captured at the right moment and turned into sleep.
In practice, this might look like a baby who seems sleepy and rubbing their eyes in the car or buggy, drifts in and out for a few minutes without fully sleeping, and then seems wired or unsettled once you try to put them down properly. It's not that they've become "overtired" beyond help; it's that some of the pressure that would have helped them fall asleep easily has already been spent.
What This Means in Practice
Rather than watching the clock anxiously for an "overtiredness" cut-off that doesn't really exist, the more useful thing to focus on is timing naps and bedtime so that sleep pressure is captured at the right point, before it has the chance to leak away through drowsy wakefulness.
This comes back to the same principle I talk about throughout my work: naps and bedtime should be built around your baby's actual 24-hour sleep need and how that splits across the day, not around fear of missing a mythical window. When the routine is built around the right total and the right balance between night and day, you naturally avoid the long, drowsy-but-not-asleep stretches that cause the problems "overtiredness" gets blamed for.

What's actually worth paying attention to is making sure naps and bedtime are timed well enough that sleep pressure gets captured and converted into sleep, rather than allowed to drift away in a period of drowsiness.
